The Practical Semester in the Jena Model of Teacher Education

The practical semester is a compulsory core element of the Jena Model of Teacher Education and is usually completed in the 5th or 6th semester at a school in Thuringia. It is also possible to complete the practical semester in other federal states or even outside of Germany.

It aims

  • to further develop academic and practical professional skills in the field of teaching
  • to reflect academically on pedagogical action
  • to get to know the professional field in all its facets
  • to achieve basic confidence in dealing with pupils
  • to develop learning diagnosis and counselling skills
  • to develop a professional ethical concept for teaching and non-teaching situations
  • to acquire teaching skills with regard to subject-specific knowledge, pedagogical work and initiative in non-teaching areas
  • to increase motivation to continue studying
