“Multiculturalism and Civic Education: Global Perspectives”
(Prof. Dr. Aviv Cohen, Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

Course Description:
This course aims to raise awareness of issues of diversity and multiculturalism as part of the civic education process. We will first read theoretical writings highlighting the importance of dealing with different types of diversity as part of education in a democratic state. Following, we will examine various international case studies that deal (for better or for worse) with such issues, discussing the following topics: national diversity, religious diversity, racial diversity, gender diversity, and linguistic diversity. Finally, we will explore several pedagogical approaches that enable teachers and practitioners to address such topics in the classrooms. Throughout the course, students will be asked to reflect on their personal stances and roles in this regard.

Dr. Cohen will open his seminar for teacher educations students of all subjects from Uni Jena. This is a unique opportunity to discuss matters of heterogeneity and diversity in education in a multicultural setting. You will be asked to cooperate and work on assignments. The seminar will be held for a total group of 20-25   israely, palestinian and german students.

After participating in the class you will receive a certificate to prove your commitment.

Course Formalities:
This course offers a special integrative and innovative format. It is “embedded” in a regular, if shortened state exam preparation course.
Dr. Cohen’s part of the course will include 13-14 sessions. Prof. Dr. Laurenz Volkmann will have an introductory session with FSU students one week prior to the course’s commencement (tba). After the course, there will be two extra sessions with FSU students, probably on June 27 and July 4. Please note that the exam for the course will be in line with official requirements of our university: there will be an oral exam (last week of term, covering content of the course plus one additional topic from our list of EFL topics, please consult our homepage).
Prof. Dr. Volkmann will participate in Dr. Cohen’s course. The main part of the course is not team-taught, however, but taught by Dr. Cohen. We will try to put the course into a German perspective in our sessions before and after the course.

Registration:
10 to 15 FSU participants can be admitted to the seminar. If you are interested in this course, please register with Prof. Dr. Laurenz Volkmann via l.volk@uni-jena.de first. Register with Friedolin later. Please note that students may also participate without taking an exam at the end of the course.

End: June 20, 2022
